Retro Replay: Pixel Panic — Sega Genesis Homebrew Announcement

I am proud to announce that Retro Replay: Pixel Panic has now made the jump from the Nintendo Entertainment System to the Sega Genesis.

This is the same core game idea, but rebuilt and expanded for Sega’s 16-bit hardware with new features, updated graphics, new sprites, new sound effects, music, and a much bigger level structure. What started as a fun NES homebrew experiment has now grown into a larger arcade-style maze game with more polish, more variety, and a lot more personality.

Retro Replay: Pixel Panic is a fast-paced arcade puzzle maze game where the player collects chips, dodges enemies, uses power-ups, breaks through parts of the map, chases score, and tries to survive increasingly chaotic stages. The Genesis version keeps the spirit of the NES version but gives it a stronger arcade feel with more room for visual detail, better sound, and more ambitious level design.

This version now includes 50 unique levels, instead of relying on repeated layouts with higher speed and difficulty. Each stage has been designed to feel different, with new shapes, layouts, breakable rooms, tighter paths, open danger zones, and more intentional challenges. Some levels are smaller and more compact, while others are larger, stranger, and more maze-like. The goal was to make every level feel like its own little puzzle instead of just a recycled board.

So far, the Sega Genesis version includes:

New Sega Genesis version of the game
50 unique levels
New player sprites
New enemy sprites
Updated tiles and visual style
Breakable bomb walls
Bomb mechanics
Power-ups
Score and high-score functionality
Improved level progression
New sound effects
Music support
More arcade-style pacing
More varied level layouts
A bigger and more complete game structure

I am especially happy that the game now feels much closer to what I originally wanted Pixel Panic to become. The NES version was a great starting point, but the Genesis version gives me more room to build something that feels faster, louder, and more alive.

That said, I am still working through some technical challenges, especially with the audio side of things. I had a hard time with the music, and I would really appreciate help from anyone familiar with Sega Genesis homebrew audio, SGDK, VGM playback, VGZ playback, or getting music and sound effects working properly together.

Right now, I would love to figure out how to get the game to properly read .vgz music while still allowing my sound effects to play at the same time. If anyone has experience with Genesis sound drivers, VGM/VGZ playback, XGM, SGDK audio limitations, or a clean way to handle background music and sound effects together, I would be very grateful for the help.

The game is playable now, but I still consider it a project that can grow. I want to keep improving the visuals, tightening the gameplay, balancing the levels, polishing the audio, and possibly adding even more mechanics if the hardware and code allow it.

Future ideas include:

Better music implementation
More polished sound effects
Improved enemy behavior
More enemy personality
Additional hazards
More power-up variety
Better title screen polish
Improved game over and victory screens
More animation
Better visual effects
Expanded scoring ideas
Possible bonus rooms or secret paths

The NES version proved the idea could work. The Sega Genesis version is where Pixel Panic is starting to feel like its own real game.

Huge thanks to everyone who has answered questions, tested ideas, helped with code, or supported the project so far. Homebrew can be frustrating, especially when you are learning as you go, but it is also incredibly rewarding when the game finally starts coming together.

Feedback is welcome, especially from Sega Genesis homebrew developers, SGDK users, retro game fans, arcade puzzle fans, and anyone who enjoys watching small homebrew projects evolve over time.

Retro Replay: Pixel Panic for Sega Genesis is playable now, with 50 unique levels and more updates planned.
