Awesome

Thank you so much, Max, you're awesome. It will be a pleasure to play on RGB Lava 2.0. Thanks to you, Max. You've worked on many other games. You've worked on many more games, doing things that no one had ever done before.

Used online patcher with a ROM from GOODMERGE, CRC32 I suppose was fine that time and..

Got a BSOD on Mednafen, KEGA Fusin says it's looks like not proper rom. THe only one Emulator that ran it was "gens100MHz_2MB_Ram" and it worked completely laggy

Great new level designs... Really pushing the Master System Limits.

I have to say. This bloke's extra levels he has made look absolutely great. I love the creativity of the level designs made on this port. They are outstanding. Even made some existing levels from the original and show how it looks in a different tile set which I saw that is very creative on his part. who would thought 35 years ago when this game first came out would see the day of a level editor to be shown for the Master System port?

I love the creative title names he has put on this as well to really make them pop out better. My personal favourite out of them all is "Let it Rip!" bringing a hilarious joke and implemented to become a level is a work of genius, Good enough to almost made me barking mad. LOL

Another one I found interesting is Level 1 Extra 2 Ohayo Lemmings San. A SNES exclusive level made here. constructing that level is not easy to do considering the Master System hardware Limitations. But that was well pulled off on this port.

One I should've tried on my stream was "Put another Lem on a Barbie." which is a clever Aussie saying for "Put another shrimp on a Barbie." as I see it being a great level to try out, it's like you entered a Barbecue hot plate. That is well designed on my books.

A lot of great new pop cultures titles made by Adrian is also added on here too which i absolutely like. Anything that Adrian has made for this hack, is well done and deserves this perfect score. Why? Cause it's not easy to made great new levels on a console port, let alone a Sega Masster System 8-Bit port. This needs to be shown more out there in the broader audience.

Well done on this Adrian.

Doesn't work for 2 players

The idea of having all routes available in a single playthrough sounded like an amazing idea, and it is if you're playing alone. However, this feature doesn't seem to work when trying to play a 2 player co-op game with a friend. And yes, even though the "Ultimate Mode" was enabled in the menu, it still didn't work as intended. Instead, the game merely plays out as it would in the original version, by making the players select which route to take. Yet strangely enough, you still start out with three magic bottles instead of one, and five lives instead of three. It's only the "all routes available" part which doesn't seem to work correctly in 2 player mode.

Hopefully the author of this romhack will be able to fix this problem in a future update. If not for this one glaring issue, this romhack would've easily been a five star review. But as it is now, I can't give it anymore than two stars at best.

epic masterpiece

Even if you have not played the original game, this is absolutely worth your time. If you have played the original, prepare to be completely amazed at the thoughtful and comprehensive revisions seen in this edition.

With the magic system shuffled and plenty of new map content, it truly does feel like an unofficial sequel!

I cannot recommend this enough, it's an apex example of a romhack that uplifts the original game. Kudos to Tomm and to everyone involved, this is a masterpiece.

Kaltz, the number 8 of Germany jr and Hamburg jr, doesn't have the secret supershot unlocked, he's the only one with this problem, the problem is in both teams. Thanks for this amazing patch anyway!

Profoundly Inspired Adaption to My Favorite Game of All Time

So, yes, like many fans of SOM, I played it in my starry-eyed youth, and it’s always been a very special game to me. Like any work of art or just something we love from our past, I’m bit a bit guarded about it being messed with too much. We’ve seen plenty of great vanilla games hacked for better and for worse. However, knowing that this revision of SOM was in the capable hands of Tomm, I decided to give it a go and I am soooo glad I did!

While his previous incredible hack, SOM plus, added fresh, world expanding material, Climate Crisis, is ultimately someplace between being a super fun new “quest” with a bunch of great QOL and aesthetic improvements and a radically different vision of the game. Yet, unlike many romhacks I’ve played that employ a bit too much creative freedom with the source material, this excellent hack never feels like it’s straying too far from the spirit of the original game. Even when some of the new scenarios are pretty wild at times LOL. But, let me just touch on a few things that I loved so much specifically.

While the switched climate areas were arguably more beautiful than the original SOM areas, the game really shines for me in just all the little fun surprise changes. Indeed, this is not at all just a temple order switch/graphics hack. While the basic plot is still intact, this is almost a completely new game in many respects! The dialogue, layouts of the dungeons, caves, etc. are mostly completely new experiences. This team really seems to understand what made this game so appealing in terms of the actual feel of it and turned that up to the max. Not only are certain areas that appear in the original SOM given more depth and lore, a lot of the time there are actual additional steps added to complete a particular part of the game. A lot of which felt missing from the original incarnation of the game. What was so remarkable to me was that they were able to keep me guessing for the entire game! It was honestly playing out as too good to be true and from the second I fell from the frozen waterfall to the final end screen, I was being wowed with new material, laughing at loud at the fun little homages of sorts, and just having a blast.

The only semi critical things I have to say are just more of a matter of taste. While super fun, some of the new material verges briefly on parody if not fully embracing that approach during a couple of scenes. My only other slight gripe is that maybe just one plot twist seems silly in light of the character that it involves and seems somewhat out of place in the mana fortress, but maybe that’s just my own bias haha. You’ll see what I mean and you can be the judge. However, the overall revision of the plot creates richer connections between the mana world and characters. Indeed, I love how some one shot characters in the original are given mutiple cameos and more development too.

But what can I say, I’m of the ilk of romhack gamer that loves to think, “wow. it’s just as if Square-Enix decided to remix an old classic” or “wowzers, it’s just as if we’re getting a lost alternate version of the game discovered in from company x’s 1994 archives”. In short, something that feels like an authentic throwback to the era. I could totally see how that might not be appealing to other people who want to spice things up a bit and not be limited to trying and emulate a bygone era. Sure, maybe getting to monkey around a bit more is the beauty of doing a romhack version and not just trying to 100% replicate the tone of the OG vanilla.

That being said, Climate Crisis, when it leans into I guess the more poignant and philosophical side of SOM, it stands toe to toe with the OG. Actually, I even enjoyed the farcical stuff and thought it was genuinely funny even if it undermines the old school feel just a little. More people will actually probably enjoy the occasional bit of wackiness too. But, I don’t want to ignore the fact the overall vibe to Climate Crisis and resolution is anything but too jokey and, in IMO, it couldn’t be a more heartfelt nod to this beloved classic.

Oh, BTW, I experienced one little glitch after (don’t want to spoil the identity) the boss before the absolute final boss. Upon defeating it, I guess nothing flagged for the next chain of events to happen. I was intially horrified because I didn’t think I could finish the game. But, as there was a save right before, I was able to repeat without any real hassle and this didn’t occur after 2 more little trials. So, if anyone experiences that, maybe just reset and enter from the actual game save instead of a save state? That seemed to work.

Ok, thanks to the creators of CLIMATE CRISIS, what a talented group of Rom Hackers. I couldn’t believe how fun, detailed, and inventive this game was! Feel free to make more excellent games!

Good but...

I appreciate most Billytime's tweak and improvement hacks, but I cannot use this until Ripley is in the very center of the screen (Please try to fix it to be like it should). That said, I reccomend the hack as it is currently, since the game already profits from it. Thanks for taking time to do all your hacks!

Great Hack

I stumbled upon this creator's FFIX ATB hack and loved it. Very happy to have been linked this one as well. Would def recommend to anyone interested in tinkering with FFVII for a fresh experience.

Thank You. I no longer have to play the JP version for the definitive experience.

"Contra: Hard Corps" is one of my favorite Genesis titles. Despite that, I am not a fan of the changes made for the western release which made an already difficult game next to impossible to beat. I strongly recommend combining this patch alongside the "3 Hit Point" patch. With this, you'll get an experience that's identical to playing the JP version and frankly the experience we westerners SHOULD have gotten.

Now, if you're thinking of combining this hack alongside "3 Hit Points", just follow these steps:

Step 1: Apply "3 Hit Points" mod

Step 2: Apply this patch on top of the modified ROM

Step 3: Fix checksum (To prevent the "red screen of death" when booting up the game)

He's Got Spunk And Knows How To Tread In Sonic's Shoes

Move over Sonic! Boxguy is in town.

Boxguy Adventure 2 on the Sega Master System is a delightful little platformer made from the heart of PoyoPoyo1985. The game is a Sonic The Hedgehog 8-bit ROM hack and a welcomed one at that.

Okay well the title character is unique and original and fits well in Sonic's shoes. Boxguy has all of Sonic's basic move sets, the jump, the roll and the speed and is very well animated not only in-game but on the title screen and in the ending credit sequence, a lot of care and attention has been put into the sprites and it shows.

Boxguy Adventure 2 also features different colour palettes for all of the zones, they've all had a make over and the art used in the ''Jungle'' zone looks especially beautiful. The Special Stages are still here as well as the Chaos Emeralds.

The level layouts and maps have been altered in every single act so forget about the paths you've always known from the original game because this has some serious alterations to get used to.

A break down of each zone:

Juice Hill Zone:

This is Boxguy's version of Green Hill, it has a sunset sky with lots of bottomless pits to jump over. There are plenty of rings to collect here making the journey exciting and the underground cavern has more waterways to walk through. It should be noted that the Game Gear's arrow signs have been ported over and used to good use here.

Night Time Zone:

This is Bridge Zone at night time with some new funky level layouts. The bridges you land on can get confusing at times as some crumble and some don't with no way to really know which one's are solid or not but the good news is that act 2 is no longer an auto-scroller so you can move at your own pace.

Jungle Zone:

Boxguy enters a raspberry filled jungle full of fruit in the background. Act 1 is quite challenging as the level is nearly twice as long as the original with plenty of platforming to do. Act 2 is no longer a ''no backtrack'' go zone meaning you can back track as much as you want and won't die from touching the bottom of the screen, just be careful as a fall from the very top can drop you all the way to the beginning.

Labyrinth Zone:

This is where the game really starts to test your skills and patience. The level and object placements here are fantastic! And act 1 has nearly 200 rings to collect if you look hard enough. Those annoying ''ground floor'' tile bugs have finally gone and the air bubble placements are scattered around more evenly. It will get frustrating at first but after a few play sessions you start to learn where everything is and can better zip through the zone at ease.

Scrap Brain Zone:

In my opinion this one's probably the hardest to get through, the graphics are nice and the sky is now dark blue instead of red and orange. There are way too many bottomless pits placed here all leading to death. The conveyor belts are slippery and can run you right into those electric light bulb things that zap you if you're not careful. Act 2 is similar in nature to the original but with a lot more bottomless pits. Act 3 again is similar but has some dickish light bulb placements to make you lose all your rings and the paths are a tad bit more confusing. The good thing is that it is possible to get 100 rings in act 2.

Sky Base Zone:

Surprisingly this one is not that hard at all. The electric beams in act 1 are well placed and the platforming is really good. Act 2 has a slightly different layout where the 1up is better placed in a different location easy to get to. Act 3 is identical to the original.

Final Word:

If you're looking for a decent Sonic 1 SMS ROM hack then this might be for you. It's got a different character as the protagonist, the graphics and colour palettes have all been changed and the level layouts and maps have all been edited to give you a different experience. All Sonic sprites have been removed and changed to Boxguy including on the title screen and the ending credit screen. Some dickish layouts still remain but the game never feels overly punishing and or annoying, the difficulty is welcoming and keeps you engaged to push on to the finish line.

There are still a few bugs but nothing that blocks your path or stops you reaching the exit in each level. I believe it's safe to call it finished as it is though but any further polishing is welcomed.

Well done PoyoPoyo1985 you deserve a pat on the back! 5 out of 5 stars.

Another welcome 320x256 resolution hack..

Does exatly what is says,

The 320 res hacks is some of my favorites, makes the games more enjoyable and makes the use of upscalers like the OSSC less a hassle when using tunesd timings..

I can confirm this hack also works alog the other improvement hacks for a more defined experience..

Highly recommended.. 5/5

Great recoloring job overall

If it's possible in an update could you maybe change the color of blood splatter for characters with different colored blood?

Example being Sheeva or Reptile with green venom or the cyborgs with black oil.

ABnormality is Amazing

The description is not lying when it says when it said this hack was ambitious. The music in this hack especially the Title screen is really great. I'm not sure if the music is original is ports of tracks of other games but nonetheless its great. Getting rid of the Password Screen music was a weird change however. Maybe trying make space for the new assets and tracks I assume was the reason. Graphically it looks nice especially with the title screen logo. I do kinda wish Mega Man's sprite was updated and Bubble Man's stage looks kinda meh too me but those are minor issues for me. The new gameplay things that were added like during Bubble Man's stage having the water damage you (not unlike SM64) is pretty cool and being able ride on Rush during one of the stages was pretty rad. I would give this 10 Rocks out of 10 Mans

A
AMAZING WORK!

I hope the project can continue to be updated. Seeing such a polished Sailor Moon game doesn't make me regret the release of a new video game. I hope there will be new additions from the original Sega Genesis bosses, as well as new music. I can't wait for the other senshi to arrive! How can we collaborate artistically?

suggestion 8bitRetroLove

Hi 8bitRetroLove, there's already work done on games like Terminator 1 and 2, Robocop 2 and 3, etc., which are on romhackplaza: https://romhackplaza.org/romhacks/famicom-expansion-port-controllers-support-collection-nes/#. Games like Nightmare on Elms Street and others work perfectly with the 15-pin expansion port. If they're not working for you, it's probably due to the type of controller you're using. There are new Chinese controllers sold on AliExpress with 15-pin outputs that don't work very well because they're poorly made. If you're using older clone controllers, most of the new ones work perfectly. That might be your problem.
