It’s finally available on RomHack Plaza!

This is a colour hack improvement by Nik Pi of Nemesis-C’s Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Arcade hack for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. It attempts to bring the Mega Drive port of UMK3 closer to the arcade. This means including cutscenes from the arcade and bringing back Sheeva, whom was cut from the Mega Drive and Super Nintendo ports of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. There is also a moves list added to the Secrets cheat menu. When bosses are enabled they are playable on 1 player mode via secret character boxes which can be found by moving off the character grid. Secret characters are Human Smoke, Chameleon, and the two bosses are also selectable. There is an option to change the frequency of the game to optimise gameplay for either 50Hz or 60Hz fully supporting your NTSC North American SEGA Genesis running at 60Hz or your PAL European SEGA Mega Drive running at 50Hz, you’re fully supported no matter where you are in the world, something every hack should have wouldn’t you agree? Some levels that were cut were also restored, such as the graveyard. This hack brings the total size of the ROM to 6 Megabytes/48 Megabits using the 10 Megabyte mapper and because of this you have to disconnect your Mega-CD/SEGA-CD attachment when running the game on real hardware via an EverDrive X7, Pro or Core flash cart.

This recolour hack by Nik Pi changes palette data of some UMK3 characters to better match their arcade counterparts.

Changes for P1 sprites:

  • Sindel’s skin tone is slighty brighter now;
  • Jade’s skin tone is slighty darker (taken from Mortal Kombat II Unlimited – Enhanced Colours hack by Pyron);
  • Cyrax was recoloured to a more orange-tinted yellow (both for P1 and P2);
  • Smoke has colours from his own VS-screen palette data (both for P1 and P2).

Changes for P2 sprites:

  • Kitana’s outfit colour is turquoise now for better sprite distinguishing;
  • Human Smoke was recoloured to better match his MK Trilogy counterpart;
  • Ermac’s sprite was made brighter;
  • Human Sub-Zero and Rain have darker outfits now;
  • Stryker’s shirt has more high-contrast red;

Also some VS-screens were redone.

Of all the great and interesting things that ROM modders add to these already existing games the one issue every Mortal Kombat game on the Mega Drive/Genesis has is the bullshit AI especially in Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 which goes berserk and counters everything you do which is why there is a Game Genie and Pro Action Replay code added here to make you invincible so you can breeze through it if you choose to.

On The Title Screen Press:

1. A, C, UP, B, UP, B, A, DOWN,

2. B, A, DOWN, LEFT, A, DOWN, C, RIGHT, UP, DOWN,

3. C, RIGHT, A, LEFT, A, UP, C, RIGHT, A, LEFT, A, UP,

INVINCIBLE GAME GENIE CODE: ALDA JA90

PRO ACTION REPLAY CODE EQUIVALENT: 0486F6 6002

NOTES:

1. The original single patch by Nik Pi was made for v0.71 version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 – Arcade Hack by Nemesis_C, which can be found online. The patch on this page already has both the original Nemesis-C Arcade patch and Nik Pi’s recolour patch both already inside the patch. All you’re required to do is patch it to the USA version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and everything else is ready and done.

2. This hack fully supports all regions, so if you’re on a PAL 50Hz Mega Drive in Europe or an NTSC 60Hz Genesis in America, you can just change the refresh rate by going to the options screen and changing the frequency to match your region manually. On PAL systems choosing the 50Hz option speeds the game up accordingly to match the NTSC 60Hz speed. If you’re on NTSC 60Hz just make sure you set the frequency to 60Hz otherwise if left on 50Hz the game speeds up twice as fast giving you an epileptic 70Hz.

3. No slow music for PAL 50Hz systems and no regional lockout screens for any region.

4. If attempting to play this on an emulator, you’ll need to go looking on your own for a compatible emulator that accepts larger ROM sizes, this hack is not supported by many Mega Drive/Genesis emulators much like ”Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy”. Regen, Kega Fusion and Gens Plus do not support this game.

5. The patch is in classic Lunar IPS format inside the ZIP file, just patch it to the USA version of ”Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Make sure the hash information you get matches the one here for best results.

6. The patch on this page is better than the one on RomHacking.Net with two very important differences. Firstly the checksum is fixed before it gets patched to the ROM where as on RomHacking.Net YOU have to fix the checksum yourself after the patch is patched to the ROM, fail to do anything will result in a red screen. The problem with this is that half the community doesn’t know how to do this themselves even though there are many tools available and many available from this site, so any effort to minimise the download steps is the path chosen here. Secondly, on RomHacking.Net You have to patch both the Nemesis-C Arcade patch and Nik Pi’s recolour patch separately onto the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 retail ROM. Here on RomHack Plaza both patches are contained into the one patch here which only needs to be patched to the retail version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

7. This ROM hack has been carefully tested on real hardware and has been confirmed to work 100% without any problems or issues.

8. Lastly some images below in the gallery section will blink to show you the original Genesis colours and then the new recolours by Nik Pi.

It is very important that your hash information matches the one here above for best results, otherwise if it doesn't match, you may run into red screens, incorrect checksums upon patching, in-game illegal instructions after a match, graphical errors and other weird effects.
