Super Mario World: The Definitive Edition is a ROM-Hack of the original Super Mario World game on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was made originally as a remaster of the Super Mario World Plus hack which was released in May of 2024. Definitive Edition started progress in early 2025 around February and the first public build is now released for Christmas 2025.

The hack features new bugfixes from the original, new separated player sprites for Mario and Luigi, new and improved overworld player sprites, separate level locations that players start off in when continuing a save file, new level themes, sprites, and soundtracks from the Super Mario Maker series and VLDC ROM-Hacks, Super Mario Advance 2 level structure, improved Yoshi sprites, fixed Bowser hair palette, Super Mario Maker 2 color palettes and sprites, an ability to re-enter switch palaces by going to them after completing them and pressing L+R simultaneously just like with castles, giving red and blue switch blocks powerups as well, extended level names, climbing and skidding sound effects, and many, many more!

In the future, new features are planned to be added. These include 5-Player multiplayer, wall-jumping, ground-pounding, air diving, SMAS+SMW controller features and exiting to title mechanic, better SMA2 level structure, better SMM2 graphics import, fixed castle checkpoints, more enemy sprite imports, more SMM2 stuff, full-on SMM2 level backgrounds, and other bugfixes.

Merry Christmas 2025, and Happy 2026!

Looks great, sounds great

Really like this so far, and I've only made it to Donut Plains but the added details and content are quite evident.

Hearing a new song before leaving Yoshi's Island sets a great tone, and seeing the Cape on the world map is awesome! Thanks for making this happen as a Christmas release, this is super nostalgic and very sweet!

CRC32 B19ED489 appears to work fine, for the record.

UPDATE: I've seen a lot more of this since the initial review and I still love it. There are something like 4 or more extra songs imported from remakes of this title and they add a LOT of depth to Dinosaur Land! A particularly sinister one plays during the Vanilla Dome lava stage when you're forced to dodge the Blarggs, and it's fantastic.

The world map place names are no longer all caps, and were lengthened and improved for clarity: the Star Roads aren't just numbered but have their connections listed, as one example.

Perhaps the biggest change is so well done that it went unnoticed at first-- when Fire Mario or Cape Mario are hit, you revert back to Super Mario, not the tiny un-mushroomed regular Mario! This gives the player another HP, and it's a tremendous QoL improvement imho. If you're a SMW fan who doesn't like this mechanic getting altered, then... this might be the only drawback to this awesome version of the game.

Absolutely recommended, this is a 10/10 stellar romhack that deftly succeeds in improving an already solid game in key ways.
