Description

(SRAM Release Notice - If you have an existing save file of this hack [christmas build or asm update], you'll sadly have to delete it as this update corrupts any pre-existing save file without the patch.)

Super Mario World: The Definitive Edition is a ROM-Hack of the original Super Mario World game on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was made originally as a remaster of the Super Mario World Plus hack which was released in May of 2024. Definitive Edition started progress in early 2025 around February.

This hack has also been tested on original hardware using an SD2SNES flashcart and has been confirmed to work on it.

The hack is meant to add bugfixes from the original game, add all new content (from things such as SMAS+SMW, Super Mario Advance 2, the Super Mario Maker series, the VLDC ROM-Hacks by SMWCentral, and prototypes themself of SMW) such as course themes, music, sprites, level structures, features, and others. There are also a couple extra new things that were added which were never originally in any adaption of SMW. More info can be found in the changelog.txt

The hack is inspired by many things such as SMAS+SMW, SMA2, SMM series, VLDC hacks, SMW protos, SMW Remastered, SMW 30th Anniversary Edition, SMW Just Keef Edition, SMW Redone, IsoFrieze/Dotsarecool romhacks, the New Super Mario Bros. series + SMB Wonder, and MaternalBound 2 Redux.

Looks great, sounds great

Really like this so far, and I've only made it to Donut Plains but the added details and content are quite evident.

Hearing a new song before leaving Yoshi's Island sets a great tone, and seeing the Cape on the world map is awesome! Thanks for making this happen as a Christmas release, this is super nostalgic and very sweet!

CRC32 B19ED489 appears to work fine, for the record.

UPDATE: I've seen a lot more of this since the initial review and I still love it. There are something like 4 or more extra songs imported from remakes of this title and they add a LOT of depth to Dinosaur Land! A particularly sinister one plays during the Vanilla Dome lava stage when you're forced to dodge the Blarggs, and it's fantastic.

The world map place names are no longer all caps, and were lengthened and improved for clarity: the Star Roads aren't just numbered but have their connections listed, as one example.

Perhaps the biggest change is so well done that it went unnoticed at first-- when Fire Mario or Cape Mario are hit, you revert back to Super Mario, not the tiny un-mushroomed regular Mario! This gives the player another HP, and it's a tremendous QoL improvement imho. If you're a SMW fan who doesn't like this mechanic getting altered, then... this might be the only drawback to this awesome version of the game.

Absolutely recommended, this is a 10/10 stellar romhack that deftly succeeds in improving an already solid game in key ways.

The checksum might be wrong. My file's CRC32 is B19ED489. I couldn't find one with the one listed here. I applied the patch anyway and it works fine, as far as I can tell by playing the first few levels. All the listed changes seem to be there. I liked what I saw, but I also noticed some slowdown that is not there in the unpatched rom in the first level to the right of Yoshi's house, "Yoshi's island 2". It was when I ran and tried jumping on all the red turtles from the beginning of the level. I was using Mesen. ...and I don't love the darker color of the brown platforms in "Yoshi's island 3". Just my opinion. Thanks.
