Sonic 1 Alternative Universe is a Sonic 1 hack that changes the graphics, colour palettes, level layouts, music and other things. There is a lot to see here and all the changes come in different versions.

STORY:

Using radar, Dr. Robotnik discovers that chaos emeralds are on a mystical island. Then he manages to gather them and use their powers to create neo energy, a new source of energy for his machines. After that, Dr. Robotnik dominates the mystical island, and begins his plans to take over the world. Sonic discovers the evil scientist’s plans, and sets out on another adventure. Now he must stop the villain’s plans, and recover the emeralds from chaos, to restore the mystical island with their power.

FEATURES: 

• New and recycled art and graphics.
• Different colour palettes.
• Different music ported from other games.
• Badniks have different art.
• Robotnik monitors are in the game.
• Spindash is added.
• Drop Dash is added in the new 5.0 version.
• Sonic 2 cheat screen added when cheat is entered on the title screen.

NOTES:

There are 4 patches inside the ZIP folder of different versions of the same game. There is a 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and a brand new 5.0.

V3.0 This build does it’s best to impress you with the art in the background and foreground which is it’s strongest asset. One zone has the Mushroom Hill background with Tidal Tempest’s foreground to create a new zone. The level map design in all the zones on the other hand is quite bland and straight forward with not many rings and obstacles in the path. Usually there’s only one way to go instead of having two separate paths. Has some different tunes over the later builds as well.

V3.5 Has the least amount of changes and plays more like your standard Sonic 1 hack, it does have different tunes, different colours and a few new layouts.

V4.0 Has different art, graphics, level layouts and music from the V3.5. Interestingly it has Azure Lake Zone in full screen and the first zone has a nice big endless waterfall in the background of Mystic Island Zone.

V5.0 The latest and greatest now has the drop dash added for Sonic and new level layouts with redesigned colour palettes, backgrounds and music. There is some new art as well. This latest build is official and not a ”leaked build”.

NOTES: 

• Due to the author’s request, I have removed V4.5 from the ZIP folder as it was an unauthorised leaked version of the game. ”NO, I didn’t leak it myself, it was already leaked when I found it”.

• Also the author ZakionGames88 aka Adriano Mendes, Adriano Nostálgico has stated that 4.0 and the leaked 4.5 are not the final versions of the game. The new 5.0 version is most likely the final version.

• 21-1-2026 What’s new is V3.0 has been found and added into the ZIP folder. Usually a newer build gets added, instead I added an older build that was lost roaming around Youtube.

• When entering the cheat on the title screen, if you suddenly get a black screen, just press B or C and the cheat screen will display.

INSTRUCTION:

Inside the ZIP file, you’ll find 4 patches of the same game. They must be patched to the (European/USA) version of Sonic 1.
