Final Fantasy VI is, to sum it up in a catchy soundbyte, “Final Fantasy VI Remake, or at least as close as the original SNES version can get”. The aim of the mod is to polish up all aspects of VI’s gameplay, story, and graphics, as much as possible, to give the best experience possible without straying from the core concepts of the original game and its vision.
Specific details on individual characters, locations, and gameplay mechanics, can be found in the FAQ included in the download. As a (relatively) brief overview, this mod includes the following:
GAMEPLAY
- Rebalanced characters to nerf overpowered characters and skills, buff the underused ones, and stronger and more aggressive enemies, with the total being that the game is more challenging without being unforgiving or overly difficult.
- Esper level up bonuses are removed in favor of an equipment system inspired by Final Fantasy XII, where different types of equipment pieces have different stat bonuses and passive abilities, letting you build characters differently as you like.
- Espers teach spells faster and teach a wider variety of spells, including new spells for the Wind, Water, and Earth elements. Esper summons are also much stronger. Esper distribution has been shuffled, some are found in different places, and there is an entirely new Esper.
- Shadow will not only no longer randomly leave the party after battles in the World of Balance, but it is also possible to hire him to accompany to the party to the opera and the southern continent, in which case he will leave the party upon returning to Zozo on the Blackjack.
- Characters have ultimate weapons that can be obtained in the World of Ruin, many of which have unique effects, some of which were specially coded for this mod. Locke’s weapon, for example, increases the odds of getting rare items from steals and drops.
- The C.V. Reynolds Bugfix Compilation patch, providing numerous bugfixes across the game. Quality of life features are also included, like B-Button sprint, switching between the Equip and Relic screens with Y, and icons to show Esper mastery.
- An all-new, original bonus dungeon, the “Dragon Shrine”, is unlocked after defeating all of the Eight Dragons and the Warring Triad. The dungeon is inspired by the GBA Dragons’ Den in that there are rematches with more powerful versions of the Eight Dragons, but its layout and puzzles are entirely different.
- An all-new Bestiary function is included that keeps track of enemies and bosses you’ve faced and allows you to view their stats. It can be accessed via NPCs in the Narshe school and on both airships.
STORY
- The script was touched-up all around in consultation with the GBA, Pixel Remaster, and original Japanese scripts. The intent was to rewrite the story to stay truer to the spirit of the original text without losing the classic Ted Woolsey charm, and occasionally taking some liberties for the sake of a stronger or more coherent narrative. (As one innocuous example, in all versions of FF6, Terra says to Locke at Figaro that Edgar referred to him as a thief, even though Edgar never did; in this mod’s script, he does).
- Several all-new story scenes were added, including a new flashback to Terra’s past when traveling to Thamasa, an extended conversation between Locke and Celes that reveals why she was branded a traitor, a miniboss in Terra’s scenario and a forced detour to visit the Moogles, and an unlockable scene where Strago confronts Shadow about his true identity.
- There are also smaller, optional conversations, like Sabin reconciling with Figaro’s matron, Terra asking Gestahl about her mother, and Cid remaining on the Blackjack through the end of the World of Balance with dialogue.
- Lots of new unique dialogue for party members, particularly for story sequences in the World of Ruin. Instead of generic “canned dialogue” for story sequences, various characters may have unique lines to say instead if they are in the party. This allows the character dynamics to be fleshed out a little more and lets their character shine through stronger.
- Siegfried is replaced by Gilgamesh, who as always is searching for the legendary Excalibur, and his sideplot gets a proper conclusion.
GRAPHICS AND PRESENTATION
- New character sprites for the player party and Kefka to make them more colorful and faithful to their original Yoshitaka Amano concept art. Numerous NPCs of importance, such as Madeline, Duane, and Duncan, now have unique sprites.
- Various areas have been given a design overhaul; Figaro Castle has more technological elements about, while Doma Castle has none at all, for example.
- Some locations on the world map have new tiles. The Esper World has an entirely new appearance. All cities in the World of Ruin utilize the proper WoR palette. The Magitek Research Facility has a more varied color palette with new details added to the area to help navigation.
- Numerous story scenes were overhauled for consistency, presentation, etc. The Siege of Doma features actual combat between the Domans and the Imperials, the Guardian is now stored in the hangar at the Imperial Palace, and various other minor enhancements.
- The patches “Restored Ability Names” and “Expanded Item Names” are included, allowing for the names of most abilities and items to be longer, and most have been updated to “modern” FF standards.
