Super Mario Bros. 3 Level Design Contest (SMB3LDC) is a compilation of custom levels created and submitted in the year 2023, hosted by the community at SMW Central. The collection features a total of 30 entries, including additional extra levels, all of which are accessible in a non-linear format. The first four tiers are available from the beginning, while access to Tier 5 requires players to obtain four keys, each located in the preceding tiers. Upon completing a level, players earn a level counter that tracks progress on the status screen replacing the lives counter. The objective is to collect all available level counters.

However, prospective players—particularly completionists, casual participants, and those engaging in blind playthroughs—are advised to proceed with caution. Many of the stages are notably lengthy, exceptionally challenging, and complex in layout, potentially leading to a frustrating experience for some.

The project utilizes the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) version of Super Mario Bros. 3, as opposed to the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) version. This decision was based on the NES version’s technical limitations, which hinder the feasibility of producing a comprehensive compilation hack. In contrast, the SNES version offers expanded ROM space and supports the MSU-1 chip, enabling the integration of CD-quality audio. While the game is compatible with such enhanced soundtracks, these are not included on the hosting website. Additional instructions and details can be found in the accompanying Instruction Manual.

This compilation introduces entirely new game mechanics, original items, and minor modifications to enemy AI behavior. Furthermore, a Hard Mode is included, offering an alternate gameplay experience. In Hard Mode, players always begin levels as Small Mario, consistent with the damage system found in the Japanese NES release of Super Mario Bros. 3. Items such as power-ups are largely unavailable, with the exception of essential keys. Notably, in Tier 6’s “Extra 8,” no power-ups are present at all, significantly increasing the difficulty.
