Are you craving another amazing Sonic 1 hack crafted in the same way as Sonic 1 Pixel Perfect, Mobius Evolution and Sonic 1 Revamped? Completed with it’s own music, art, colours and level layouts? Well then your Hedgehog platforming addiction is cured.

Sonic Mildness released in 2014 is another beautiful looking Sonic 1 hack with gorgeous colour palettes, laveshing level layouts, groovy music ports, original music remixes, new drumkit samples, spindash and the first boss being completely new and different!

Solaryen Eylinor (Solar) is the main author and the one who started the project back in 2014 with the help of a small team of developers, but Solar has reported that the project is now owned by somebody else, not really specifying who that person is and since 2014, no more updates have ever come out.

STORY: Dr. Robotnik is snatching innocent animals on South Island yet again to make more of his own evil slave robots and only one tough dude with the spiked haircut can come to their rescue and stop the doc. As Sonic The Hedgehog, you’ll dash through 6 hazardous zones collecting rings, jumping on item boxes, dodging crazed robots and meeting Dr. Robotnik at the end of every third act and if you’re lucky enough to finish each act with 50 rings or more you can warp to the Special Stage where you’ll spin and float around in a maze looking for the 6 Chaos Emeralds to give the island a good future.

ZONES:

Palm Island Zone: Is a beautiful bay side area filled with lots of rings, item containers and badniks. Avoid the giant swinging balls when you travel through the tunnels.

Sandy Palace Zone: Is an underground ruin located deep in the desert of South Island. Many traps to avoid here so careful platforming is required. Sandy Palace is also one of two zones in this game where the graphics go from morning, noon and night in each act.

Chalky Ruins Zone: Is an underground water temple filled with lots of traps and Sonic-stopping obstacles. Breathing in air bubbles keeps Sonic from drowning.

Abandoned City Zone: Is an unfinished construction site located high in the sky. This is probably one of the few zones where it is actually safe to travel quickly through it. Those annoying Orbinaut badniks block your path though and there are many fire spits to avoid here.

Egg Blaster Zone: Is where Robotnik has prepared one of his senior robots for a return fight with Sonic. Many tight passage ways and hidden rooms to explore here but this zone has many different paths to take and some lead you to a dead end so best bet is to avoid the checkpoints in this area completely otherwise you may be finding yourself reaching for the reset button. It can be cleared if the right path is taken.

Central Chaos Zone: Another Scrap Brain copy-cat zone with some new art. The dick moves become infuriating here and many of the badniks are badly placed.

Fight Fight: Sonic’s greatest challenge lurks in a secret lab where he battles the evil doctor in his chamber of torture.

KNOWN BUGS:

At the end of Central Chaos Zone Act 2, you need to jump off screen to the right just before the panel stops spinning and before the end of level jingle starts playing, fail to do so will cause Sonic to automatically run off screen to the right causing the game to lock up by going into a never ending loop of score tallying with no way of it ever finishing.

Egg Blaster Zone Acts 1 and 2 have a few tricky paths to take and a one or two of them end up as dead ends with no way of backtracking. When reaching this zone it is best to avoid the checkpoints, that way if you do manage to get trapped, killing yourself or waiting for the time over to appear will send you back to the beginning of the level so you can pick another path.

There is a rather strange glitch in Chalky Ruins Zone Act 1. When you touch the very first checkpoint, the hud disappears off screen, your collected rings and lives are all still recorded til the end of the level but the hud stays absent until you reach Abandoned City Zone Act 1 where the hud returns when you touch the very first checkpoint. It’s unfortunate that the checkpoint in Chalky Ruins Zone Act 1 cannot be jumped over as there is not enough room to pass the area unless touching it. Lucky this is only a minor annoyance and a rather small bug.

TIPS: Sonic Mildness is as an action platforming Sonic game that requires very careful and slow platforming to get through many of the obstacles found in the levels. It’s a hack that has level layouts not been tested for serious bugs during development so as a result, there are some other very small bugs that can be found in the zones from time to time and plummeting through the levels really fast will likely get you stuck, trapped or maybe even having to reset. If you’re playing on an emulator, use save states often because the later levels start getting more dickish in level layout especially Central Chaos Zone.

Quite an interesting project

Written by: diablo666 - November 4, 2024

I'm a hedgehog fan... And that's me... But not about that now. About the hack: 1. The levels and Level Design are executed competently and interestingly. I want to study and replay 2. The graphic part is done correctly and does not cause problems for the most part. I omit the minimum fuzzy moments, because it is insignificant. 3. Music. The remixes sound well, as if they originally lived on this console. 4. The new bosses are made soundly and interestingly. And the old ones were competently updated, or they were updated for easy hydration. Well, those were the pros. A negative moment can cause a bug in the last stage of Act 2. It calls the game's SOFTLOCK. From this I will slightly lower the rating, but even so: the Hack is worth paying attention to because it is well played and will be interesting to many
