The Revenge of Shinobi, known in Japan as The Super Shinobi (ザ・スーパー忍), is a SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis action game developed by Sega R&D 2 and published by Sega. First released in Japan in December 1989, the game is an evolution of the 1987 arcade game Shinobi, and was one of the most impressive games in the Mega Drive’s early library. A critical and commercial success, The Revenge of Shinobi is fondly remembered as a classic and seminal Sega game, and would receive numerous sequels, ports, and re-releases.
The introductory cutscene and subsequent title screen feature the famous martial arts actor Sonny Chiba dressed as Hattori Hanzou from the popular TV series Kage no Gundan.

NOTES:
1. The version used for the patches is the rev 1.01 or v1 (the one without DC comic Batman and Rambo). The patches can be patched to either rev 1.00 or 1.01, all other revisions from 1990 onwards are not compatible and bring up a red screen.
2. God Mode Edition 1 patch has a more stable and better invincibility where it’s completely immune to all enemies and bosses (except the final boss) the invincibility stops working when you reach the final boss and you have to rely on Ikazuchi ninja magic for invincibility to beat the boss much like the regular game.
3. God Mode Edition 2 patch has more changes done to it but has broken physics as Joe has a habit of losing his power pack every now and then just out of the blue and the jumping mechanic at times shows the wrong sprites when in mid-air and doesn’t quite respond the way it should. To do the double jump flip in this patch, you need to jump by pressing C and holding down at the same time so Joe will jump like normal.
4. In God Mode Edition 2 patch, the invincibility does work on the final boss but every time he hits you with his hair, you lose the power pack and have to pause and re-pause after every time he hits you to enable it again.
5. God Mode made the hacks using revision 1.01 which is the second release in very late 1989. The patches can be patched to either this ROM or the revision 1.00 which is the very first release from September 1989, but you won’t get the DC comic Batman boss in stage 6 and the Rambo enemies in the game if patched to 1.00, the patches override the original ROM and change everything to the version used in the patches, so you’ll get the bald men with caps and the Go Nagai winged Devilman boss in stage 6.
6. In my opinion, God Mode Edition 1 is better than God Mode Edition 2, the invincibility is consistent and far more stable. The only trade off is that It stops working on the final boss.
7. The game can be completed in both patches, 100% confirmed.
8. The score system is a little screwed up not showing all the numbers and points.
9. If you want infinite shurikens, go to options, put shurikens to 00 hold it there for 30 seconds, the 00 will change into a symbol, now you have infinite shurikens at 999.
