A graphics overhaul of the original Super Mario Bros. taking inspiration from Mario’s modern adventures!

This is a fairly simple hack that I just made for a personal challenge and to get familiar with hacking NES games. Maybe I will update it  when I’ve learned more about rom hacking.

awesome and fresh version of a classic

Written by: xJ4cks - December 16, 2025

This looks fantastic! Tremendously entertaining to see a modern face on Lakitu, Goombas, Koopas, and everyone else. King Koopa finally looks like Bowser! Mario matches his SMW appearance quite closely, given the 8-bit color limitations, and this is a nfity achievement all by itself.

Many of the "tall mushroom" levels have their own unique landscape tiles now, and World 3 is much funkier than its prior black sky. The bonus world vines have little piranha plants on top, even-- a lot of careful and clever work is on display in this hack.

Retaining the original palettes with their browns and teals, while adapting the sprites gives this a refreshing modern feel without losing the familar 1980s Nintendo vibe. Highly recommended for those of us old enough to remember SMB on the NES, and for anyone who wants to see this classic game given a loving and meticulous visual overhaul.
