Description
Sponge & Pretzel Bros. is a BootlegBandit solo ROM hack of the original Mario Bros. created specifically to act as the prequel to two hacks made famous by Vinesauce: Mario’s Mystery Meat on SNES and Super Sponge Bros. on NES. The idea was to finally give those two chaotic classics an origin story, tying everything together.
In 2025, legendary ROM hacker BootlegBandit stepped in to help shape a project into something that felt like it truly belonged in that weird lineage. True to his rom-hacking style, he kept everything faithful to the original developers’ design philosophy- sticking to the hardware limits, the visual style, and the gameplay of the era.
With this, the trilogy is finally complete: Sponge & Pretzel Bros. as the beginning, Super Sponge Bros. as the middle chapter, and Mario’s Mystery Meat as the finale.
