A shining example of Romhacking

The Romhacking scene has produced several stellar Rom Hacks over the years. Proving that fan creations can often surpass the source material. Mario Kart - Horizons is a shining example of such a Rom Hack.

From the moment you load up the title screen you'll notice the polish of this title. A brand new soundtrack starts playing and beautifully touched up Mario Kart drivers enter the screen. (Those new Toad and DK sprites are just cute!) From there it keeps getting better as you start your first race.

The creator clearly has some experience in creating Mario Kart tracks. Even though Epic Edit is an amazing tool, it still is hard to create good Mario Kart tracks. MK - Horizons uses wide roads, so you have the space to maneuver your kart around. Arrows on the road, warning you for a turn or pointing the right direction are conveniently placed. This hack works hard to be friendly to the player and give them a good time.

A.I. is programmed really well. I never got an A.I. stuck somewhere (which even happens in vanilla MK) and the difficulty balance feels just right. 50cc is easy, 100cc is a decent challenge and 150cc is hard. This is another sign that the creator was focused on creating a fun experience. No trolling in this hack!

The new track graphics shine. They give each track a brand new lick of paint, making Horizons feel like Mario Kart 2.0. I would recommend everyone to play this game in BSNES HD Mod. Those new graphics truly shine in HD Mode 7!

I had such a fun time with Mario Kart - Horizons. The amount of polish is stunning, and the track design is some of the best I've seen in Mario Kart hacks. MK - Horizons comes highly recommend for those seeking a genuinely fun Super Mario Kart follow-up!
