New PHPBB Forum

Post by BenjaminCM » Sun Sep 22, 2024 1:23 pm

A lot of complaints have been made about the use of Flarum, so we've decided to switch to PhpBB. Unfortunately, messages can't be transferred automatically. You'll have to rewrite your topics manually...

We leave this backup available so that you can retrieve your topics.

To login, you can use the same creditenals as main website. (Same username and password). If you want to edit your password or E-Mail, do it via Wordpress and do it after via PHPBB if it was not updated automatically.

Thanks for all your work! I will rewrite my articles myself since they would need some touchup.

This looks like ass now, compared to what it used to be with colorful icons and stuff, and with new messages counter, and with sorting by newest. It was looking so modern, and now back to the old shit. Good job, I hate it

LMAO. I think Benjamin might be able to tweak a few things with settings or the like.

The site for the forum software has a number of extensions, which anyone can browse for suggestions. And their own message board has an option for active topics, so that should be feasible. https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/extensions-36

If you have some ideas to improve Plaza Forums, tell me. But please don't spit without a good reason. I did it according to the opinion of the majority who preferred a classic forum.

Oh, and now I can't upload my avatar because it's bigger than 256 pixels. I don't recall this problem on Flarum. Are we back to the stone age?

The lack of thread titles seems to be a mobile/vertical issue on the front page. Don't know if that can be seen to at some point, but I agree that a recent activity feature would be convenient for many users. An old layout, give or take a few style points, is more familiar to members of other scenes.

Constructive criticism around that is probably more beneficial.

For avatar resizing, you can search for online tools if it's an immediate concern. 200x200 or 100x100 are fairly standard limits in other places, so you'll just need to keep the aspect ratio locked to avoid image distortion.

For portal with recent posts, I can see if I can add that.

I increase max avatar size to 1024*1024.

Edit : Added at the top of the forum "Recent Activity".

I did never hear a single complain about flarum. Where have they been made?
Here is a list about BBPHP complains I am willing to life with. I am worried that BenjaminCM gets tiered of us and I am glad to have a forum on plaza about hacking discussions.

- Media upload and navigation is much harder.
- Can't read posts while responding (2 tabs open to read 3th)
- Large quote to respond to messages that make it harder to read longer threads. (no nice hover over respond tag)
- Dark mode did not make posts dark.
- Flarum NAV for easy navigation.. now you click around a lot to get a overview on topics. (easy to miss stuff this way)
- Setting removed (Likes, Medias and Discussion) and placed friend/foes and messages I never plan to use..
(Did nobody else just love to find liked comments and reuse your media for repeated questions?)
- Needless work to set something up that is objectively worse.

Ben mentioned a place to you via Discord from what I've seen, not too sure about the others. I did see the vote thing which had a fairly large majority for a classic setup. Maybe some of the points you raised can work their way into future refinement. I don't think everyone can be pleased in the short term, but gradual changes to layout and functionality should improve the default experience and allow for some custom options.

Yes, reddit where you go when you look for people with a similar opinion to vote. All I could find was that PHPBB is a hard to maintain bulletin board software that has some new stuff creamed on top of it.

About the complain that flarum is not a bulletin board software and based on tags.
I still do not know what the complain is.. I could see this only one observation and since I have to guess I would say people never tried flarum. This is why to get showered with nothing when asking for a reason beside a vote and a opinion based of what some people might be used to.

Sorry when I sound like a jerk.

I respect the opinion of Cyneprepou4uk since he made detailed tutorials on nes-decomp with cheat sheets to learn from, or has a lot of projects on RHDN where he invested a lot to bring the projects of some people forward.
Slidelljohn is here and he answered any questions about the snes-games on RHDN for a decade like a hero.

.. I never heard them complain

I do not wish for a gradual change to layout and functionality we had a week ago with flarum.
For a reason I did mention that I can life with with the "number one bulletin board software"
If you like to please me then you follow your own advice and tell me why a classic forum is better. Or ignore all of it and work on some hack that always makes me happy to see too.

When Ben is happy maintaining it there is nothing to complain.. if you would like a more detailed list what was really nice with flarum with side by side and picture I could do that to but I kinda had like the voters to do that.

I don't bother with reddit, so I couldn't care less what happens there. :|

I just meant the recent voting on Discord about the forum. Since I have no major complaints about either software solution, I'm happy to leave the finer details between staff and whoever else.

Not sure about reddit and I did not bother to search it for long then 10min..

Also not sure about the voting. I think most people did just click on the thing they know and might not be able to come up with a complain. May be a neutral vote could had made it even.
PHPBB is old and did stand the test of time. Like windows 7, ZSNES or YYCHR.. you can find people that defend software as the best. Most of the time this is probably nostalgia. Also not a bad thing.. I was just happy using something new and did find so many things that make a forum more fun. I could also imagine that the administration is nicer.

Thanks for engaging in a after vote conversation that might be pointless.

So you can not come up with a point "classic bulletin board software" does something better eater?
Would be a after vote question I had like to hear the answer. What is better now?

So thanks a lot of the chat. Cya, and let me hear when you find some of this complains!

Am I allowed to do a survey with the people who submitted votes?

I would inform them that the result will be posted nameless (if they wish) in this thread.

Just quick follow up questions like:

- Did the switch to BB-PHP resolve the problem you previosly expirienced in the forum?
- Do you feel more encuraged to engaged in forum activities now?
- Could be something done to improve it more?

This are 2 yes/no questions that could give me some insight. May be some people like to write something and I could wrapp it up down below.

Why is the text so dark on the latest posts? Both the background and text are a very dark shade of grey, making it quite difficult to read. It's actually downright unreadable unless you highlight the text in the latest post. Perhaps it would be better to simply make all text in posts white. It would definitely be more visible and readable that way.

Also, this is the only site that seems to randomly freeze and stop working from time to time. I'm using Firefox and this glitch only seems to happen here which is quite odd (both on the message board and main site). Every other website seems to work just fine. I've no idea what could be causing this, neither updating Firefox, clearing the cache/history nor restarting the browser and even the computer itself seems to fix this randomly occurring glitch.
